Brittney’s story

Ballet Girl

It has always been my dream to be a professional ballerina. But it takes complete dedication and a lot of hard work to get there. The training is very intense, giving me quite a busy schedule. When you really want to make a career out of ballet, there’s just no way you can go to a standard high school. A lot of girls who want to dance professionally wind up being home-schooled or take online high school courses. But luckily for me, there’s a high school in the city that was designed to be flexible for high school students pursuing a profession in the arts or in sports.

It was perfect for me. But it was also very different from my old high school. I had transferred from a parochial high school in the suburbs to a school in a big city. To name a few things, I no longer wear a uniform and I take the subway to school! (I didn’t realize how spoiled I was to have a bus pick me up on my corner every morning!) The city is lots of fun, but in the winter it can be brutal to have to walk everywhere! As soon as I started going to my new school, I loved it because my teachers were great and the kids who went to the school were very interesting. I found so many more people with common interests. But not all my friends are dancers; I have friends who are classical musicians, actors/actresses, singers, models, and more!

Unfortunately, because of my ballet schedule, I don’t have too much time to hang out with my friends after school. But from 8 AM ’til 12:30 PM I am surrounded by such incredible talent, and I get to experience high school at its best. I never dread going to school, and although I can be pretty exhausted from ballet, I try to enjoy every moment of it because I know that two years will go by fast.

The environment of the school is very relaxed. We can have drinks and food in the classrooms, and we’re free to leave during the day. But some really cool aspects are that I am exempt from gym (since I am very physical in ballet) and that I only have to take the core subjects like math and history. Some kids even leave in the middle of the day, train for their profession, and then come back later.

Because we are all busy working on our art form, the teachers accept homework late and guided study is an option. Guided study is when you teach yourself a subject when you have to be absent for more than 3 days for a professional reason, so you don’t fall behind. By way of e-mail, the teachers are always in contact if you have questions. What’s better than that? I get to pursue a dream in the arts while not compromising my education. Every day I know that I am getting closer and closer to achieving my goal.
